The Organization

The community members of Shackan or the Scw'exmx - People of the Creeks - is taken from the name of the Nicola River, Scw'ex, Manning Creek. The Shackan Indian Band is one of five bands in the Nicola Valley who comprise the Scw'exmx. Their mission statement is to promote the development of a healthy lifestyle and self- sufficiency for Shackan community members while achieving positive, respectful, leadership to all members when administering services. Shackan’s services comprise of Administration, Education, Finance, Social Development, Emergency Services and Capital Infrastructure.

  • Position: Accounts Payable Financial Clerk
  • Type: Full-time/Part-time
  • Salary: Based upon Shackan Indian Bands budget and the hired individuals experience.

Job Summary:

A Day in the life of our Accounts Payable Financial Clerk

  • Reconcile the accounts payable ledger to ensure that all bills and payments are accounted for and properly posted.
  • Verify and investigate discrepancies, if any, by reconciling vendor accounts and monthly vendor statements
  • Facilitate payment of invoices due by sending bill reminders and contacting clients
  • Generate reports detailing accounts payables status
  • Understand expense accounts and cost centers
  • Understands compliance issues around accounts payable processes (sales tax, etc.)
  • Process outgoing payments in compliance with financial policies and procedures
  • Perform day to day financial transactions, including verifying, classifying, and recording accounts payable data
  • Reconciles processed work by verifying entries and comparing system reports to balances.
  • Charges expenses to accounts and cost centers by analyzing invoice/expense reports, recording entries.
  • Pays vendors by monitoring discount opportunities; verifying federal id numbers; scheduling and preparing checks; resolving purchase order, contract, invoice, or payment discrepancies and documentation; insuring credit is received for outstanding memos; issuing stop-payments or purchase order amendments.
  • Pays employees by receiving and verifying expense reports and preparing checks.
  • Maintains accounting ledgers by verifying and posting account transactions.
  • Verifies vendor accounts by reconciling monthly statements and related transactions.
  • Maintains historical records by microfilming and filing documents.
  • Reports sales taxes by calculating requirements on paid invoices.
  • Protects organization's value by keeping information confidential.
  • Updates job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities.
  • Accomplishes accounting and organization mission by completing related results as needed.

ABOUT YOU - Basic Qualifications

  • High school diploma, GED, or equivalent required
  • Knowledge in accounting, finance, or related field a plus 
  • Previous accounts payable experience preferred
