About the Shackan People: The Scw'exmx - People of the Creeks - is taken from the name of the Nicola River, Scw'ex, meaning creek. The Shackan Indian Band is one of five bands in the Nicola Valley who comprise the Scw'exmx. The five bands of the Nicola Tribes are: Coldwater Indian Band, Lower Nicola Indian Band, Upper Nicola Indian Band, Nooaitch Indian Band, and Shackan Indian Band. Together, the numbers of the 5 Nicola Tribes totals well over 3,000 individuals. All part of a proud, strong, thriving Indigenous Nation of the BC Interior.
Opportunity: The Shackan Indian Band has an exciting opportunity to join our team as a full time Office Assistant. Hiring preference will be given to qualified candidates who self identify as First Nations or another Canadian Indigenous ancestry.
Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:
Provides general administrative support;
- Assists various programs as directed by Wellness Manager and Chief and Council Assistant,
- Provide support to Chief and Council Assistant when organizing events,
- Support the maintenance of records and systems,
- Assist with special projects and event planning,
- SIB receptionist back-up tasks,
- Minute taker as required,
- Other related duties as assigned.
About the Ideal Candidate:
- Completion of Grade 12 minimum,
- Interest in exploring various office related duties, must be flexible and willing to learn,
- Self managed, goal oriented and finish what you start – well organized with strong written, verbal communication and time management skills,
- Plan, organize and maintain workloads,
- Demonstrate high emotional intelligence, patience, and integrity with a commitment/team driven success in leading by example,
- Demonstrate a high degree of professionalism and good judgement,
- Good problem-solving ability, creativity, drive, and entrepreneurial spirit.
- Experience with MS Office, Zoom, and various other software
- Must be able to operate effectively and show initiative in an environment where there is at times, minimal supervision.
- Must be able to maintain confidentiality of information and use discretion, tact, and diplomacy when addressing sensitive issues.
- Maintain accurate housing and maintenance reports and provide monthly updates as required.
- Required to convey info to staff and members and explain technical matters in lay terms.
- Clear a Criminal Record/Vulnerable Persons check and valid Class 5 Drivers License with access to a reliable vehicle.
Reports to: Office Manager or Acting Office Manager in their absence
Classification: Full-time (35-hour work week), flexible hours on evenings and weekends.
