All of these different jobs and experiences eventual directed her to the Social Work Program at NVIT with her interest in child protection and family support. Some of the things Joan enjoys are; gathering berries in the mountains, traditional foods, reading, watching movies, watching her garden grow - not weeding and has a love for the Vancouver Canucks. Mary is the daughter of the late Willard and Minnie Angus (Nali) of Nicoamen Indian Band. Mary has recently transferred membership from Nicoamen to Shackan Indian Band.
As a child growing up, Mary lived in several communities (Nicoamen, Shackan and in Merritt) surrounded by Nlaka'pamux speakers and was encouraged to listen and learn. Over the years, she has heard less and less Nlaka'pamcin being spoken fluently. Someone once said. "Language can only be saved by itself; and then only if it's members acquire it will it revive." Mary taught primary grade children in Cache Creek/Bonaparte and Re-tired in Kamloops School District 31 years later. Mary has written 4 (autobiographical) children books by which the book is illustrated by each child through out several years within her classroom. As a re-tired teacher, Mary is passionate about getting Nlaka'pamcin into communities once again. She is currently employed with Citxw Nlaka'pamux Assembly (CNA). Mary is proud to represent her community of Shackan, as elected Councilor.
