The organization

The community members of Shackan or the Scw'exmx - People of the Creeks - is taken from the name of the Nicola River, Scw'ex, meaning creek. The Shackan Indian Band is one of five bands in the Nicola Valley who comprise the Scw'exmx. Their mission statement is to promote the development of a healthy lifestyle and self- sufficiency for Shackan community members while achieving positive, respectful, leadership to all members when administering services. Shackans services comprise of Administration, Education, Finance, Social Development, Emergency Services and Capital Infrastructure.

POSITION:  Office Manger

Type: Full Time 35 hrs per week

Shackan Indian Band is looking to hire a qualified and responsible person for the role of Office Manager who supports the Band Office’s operations by maintaining office systems and supervising staff.



1.   Knowledge of office protocols and procedures.

2.   Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

4.   Competency in Budget development, Accounting, Microsoft Office. 

5.   Strong leadership and Human Resource skills.

6.   Open to learning new skills to mitigate varied challenges that may arise due to emergency issues impacting community.



  1. Oversee an efficient office environment, including maintaining computer and telephone system, purchasing office supplies, and directing internal communications.
  2. Maintains office efficiency by planning and implementing office systems, layouts, and equipment procurement and maintenance.
  3. Assist in the preparation of administration budget; monitor and address variances.
  4. Completes operational requirements by scheduling and assigning tasks to employees, follow-up on work results.
  5. Issue and sign purchase orders for administrative expenditures; maintain purchase order record keeping and follow-up on payments.
  6. Maintains office staff by recruiting, selecting, orienting, and training employees with the assistance of other senior managers.
  7. Keeps management informed by reviewing and analyzing special reports and summarizing information.
  8. May assist with coordinate Chief and Council meetings, including compiling materials, taking minutes, and sending notifications to Chief and Council and staff when required.
  9. Maintains professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops; reviewing professional publications; establishing networks; participating in professional societies.
  10. Website maintenance and communication with news outlets and social media accounts.
  11. Perform other duties as appropriate.

STRUCTURE:  Reports to the Band Manager.  If the Band Manager position is vacant, this position will report directly to the Chief and Council.

HOURS:  Regular office hours are 8:30 – 4:30 with one-hour unpaid lunch.  The Office Manager may be required to work outside these hours including evenings and weekends.  With prior approval, time worked in excess of regular hours may be banked and taken off at a later date.

COMPENSATION:  Hourly wage of $30.00 - $39.00 per hour depending upon experience.  Group benefits and company pension plan provided.  Compensation is established as part of an annual performance review.

Conditions of Employment

  • Must provide Criminal Record and Vulnerable Person Check and current Drivers Abstract check prior to employment.
  • Able and willing to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends.
  • Must have reliable vehicle for work purposes.
